چکیده
Nanotechnology refers to the research and technical development of objects in a scale range of 1 to 100 nanometers. Particles that are nano-sized are opening new research avenues in the field of engineering and life sciences. Imaging with biocompatible nanoparticles has emerged as one of the most promising new diagnostic imaging technology fulfilling the goal of developing cost-effective magnetic nanoparticles with acceptable targeting efficiency, favorable pharmacokinetics and a good safety profile. These nanoparticles target the reticuloendothelial system and this combined with unique properties of superparamagnetism allows them to be used as excellent probes for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The current issue focusses on the use of a specific type of magnetic nanoparticle (ferumoxtran10) to overcome imaging handicaps in cancer staging as well as discuss emerging applications of newer magnetic nanoparticles. Imaging with ferumoxtran-10 offers the potential of staging tumors at stages much earlier that those detectable today. Therapy decisions and prognostic predictions for most tumors depend on the accurate lymph node staging at the time of initial diagnosis. Despite the importance of nodal status, accurate staging of lymph nodes in various primary tumors continues to pose a major diagnostic challenge. Following the detection of lymph nodes, the next arduous task is the characterization of nodes into benign and malignant categories. Current cross-sectional modalities like CT and MRI primarily rely on nodal size and nodal morphology for differen-

Encapsulated enhanced green fluorescence protein in silica nanoparticle for cellular imaging.
The enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP) is efficiently encapsulated in silica nanoparticle by multiple covalent bonds. The silica encapsulation greatly increases EGFP's fluorescence intensity and stabilities against protease, denaturant and heat, making it a potential fluorescence probe for cellular imaging.
متن کاملDynamic Imaging Analysis of SERS-Active Nanoparticle Clusters in Suspension
A novel wide-field approach for the real-time Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) imaging of multiple silver nanoparticle clusters suspended in solution is described. This method enables direct correlation of the SERS activity of a single nanoparticle aggregate and its size through measurement of the cluster diffusion coefficient and can also be performed in a high-throughput basis. As a f...
متن کاملNear infrared surface plasmon resonance phase imaging and nanoparticle-enhanced surface plasmon resonance phase imaging for ultrasensitive protein and DNA biosensing with oligonucleotide and aptamer microarrays.
The techniques of surface plasmon resonance-phase imaging (SPR-PI) and nanoparticle-enhanced SPR-PI have been implemented for the multiplexed bioaffinity detection of proteins and nucleic acids. The SPR-PI experiments utilized a near-infrared 860 nm light emitting diode (LED) light source and a wedge depolarizer to create a phase grating on a four-element single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) microarray;...
متن کاملSelf-Assembly of Semiconducting-Plasmonic Gold Nanoparticles with Enhanced Optical Property for Photoacoustic Imaging and Photothermal Therapy
Although various noble metal and semiconducting molecules have been developed as photoacoustic (PA) agents, the use of semiconducting polymer-metal nanoparticle hybrid materials to enhance PA signal has not been explored. A novel semiconducting-plasmonic nanovesicle was fabricated by self-assembly of semiconducting poly(perylene diimide) (PPDI) and poly(ethylene glycol (PEG) tethered gold nanop...
متن کاملIn vivo small animal micro-CT using nanoparticle contrast agents
Computed tomography (CT) is one of the most valuable modalities for in vivo imaging because it is fast, high-resolution, cost-effective, and non-invasive. Moreover, CT is heavily used not only in the clinic (for both diagnostics and treatment planning) but also in preclinical research as micro-CT. Although CT is inherently effective for lung and bone imaging, soft tissue imaging requires the us...
متن کاملEvaluation of a PSMA-targeted BNF nanoparticle construct.
Early detection enables improved prognosis for prostate cancer (PCa). A promising target for imaging and therapy of PCa is the prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA), which exhibits both expression within the epithelium of PCa cells, and becomes internalized upon ligand binding. Here we report the synthesis of a PSMA-targeted bionized nanoferrite (BNF) nanoparticle and its biological evaluat...
